Costa Rica
Costa Rica's Sea Turtle conservation project will take place at one of Costa Rica's National Parks. These projects were started to help combat poaching and have been a phenomenal success. When the initiative first began, poaching was at approximately 70%. However, as a result of having these turtle conservation projects, that are largely staffed by volunteers, poaching has been reduced to less than 10%!
Group tasks may include assisting in the hatchery with the care of the eggs and release of baby turtles, conducting beach patrols to find, mark and collect data on new nesting sites as well as egg collection, and assisting with the repair and construction of hatcheries.
Project Dates
July 9 - 23, 2010

Accommodation
During the arrival and orientation weekend, group members will be staying at our BaseCamp Center in San Jose. Located in the Los Yoses district, the center is conveniently located in close proximity to restaurants, shops, parks, cafes and bus routes.
The center has four guest rooms and four washrooms, with two dormitory style rooms and two single rooms. There is a large common area on the first floor with movies, books and games available to our guests. The hostel also has a beautiful backyard garden, an ideal setting for reading, studying Spanish, or some quiet relaxation. A quiet second floor lounge area provides another perfect place to spend some down time.
During their placement week, volunteers will be living at their placement in the volunteer lodging provided. This is a shared accommodation dorm style arrangement.
Meals
During your orientation your meals will be prepared and eaten at the BaseCamp center. The menu consists of local dishes, and can be modified to make accommodations for any allergy or food restrictions(with advance notice). While at your placement meals are prepared and eaten on site, and you may have your turn helping with meal preparation or clean up. During the final weekend activity meals are up to you.
Transportation
At the end of the orientation weekend, the group will transfer via private transportation to the National Park, where the project will take place. At the end of the work week the group will transfer via private transportation to Manuel Antonio for the final weekend and then return to San Jose.
Final Weekend
After a week of hard work, it is time for some much deserved (and needed) rest and relaxation. The group will visit Manuel Antonio, where you can enjoy all of the natural wonders of Costa Rica. Surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, rafting, horseback riding and jungle tours are just some of the options available to you at this dream location. Add to that some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it is easy to see what makes Manuel Antonio an unforgettable destination.
