Ecuador

Quito has drawn thousands from poor rural districts in search of work. However, even though Quito is a well-developed city, there simply are not enough jobs. As a result, many make their living by selling goods at one of the local markets. Children in these families often grow-up living on the streets while their parents work.

There are number of Day Care centers set up to provide a place for these children to go during the day, and receive some education, and often a meal. This years youth program will be working with some of these centers in Quito to improve the centers by adding play areas, painting and conducting general repairs. There will also be ample opportunity for coordinating games and helping with daily chores.

Accommodation
During the orientation weekend and week of project work, the group will be living at our center in Quito. The BaseCamp Center in Ecuador is located in the trendy Mariscal district of Quito. Within easy walking distance of banks, restaurants, net cafes and more, our BaseCamp Center in Quito is perfectly situated for any need. Whether you are taking advantage of the rich and vibrant nightlife of La Mariscal, or visiting a local market, BaseCamp Ecuador is always just a few minutes away.

The center has six dormitory style guest rooms, and five washrooms. Pillows, sheets, blankets and towels are provided. There are two common areas on the main floor, including a small resource center, containing books, magazines, games and other Ecuadorian publications. As well, a large selection of local movies and documentaries are available for guest viewing. In addition to the two common areas, the BaseCamp Center in Quito has a rooftop terrace, the perfect spot to watch the street come awake with a morning cup of coffee, or spend an afternoon relaxing in the sun.

Meals
Meals are prepared and served at BaseCamp each day during orientation and the week of project work. The menu consists of local dishes, and can be modified to make accommodations for any allergy or food restrictions(with advance notice). In addition to the delicious meals prepared and eaten at BaseCamp, you will also be provided with a packed lunch to bring with you to the project each day.

Transportation
Transportation to the placement and back each work day will be via public transportation, with a BaseCamp staff. Transportation to/from Banos for the final weekend will be via private transportation with BaseCamp staff accompaniment.

Final Weekend
The final weekend in Ecuador will be a trip Baños. Enjoy the excitement of a whitewater rafting experience in the Amazon, along with mountain biking, jungle treks, and of course the soothing and relaxing hot springs. Your weekend in Baños will definitely be one to remember.
